• Pocket Geiger Pro

  • On-Line Manual

In addition to the basic usage of Pocket Geiger Pro, this section explains how to set up "Free Cloud Ambient".

1. Installation of the application

To set up Pocket Geiger Pro, please install the following app.

・Windows 10 App : Download from here

We have already confirmed that the above file is not infected with any virus by Virus Buster(TM), but if you are concerned, please use Kapersky's online scanning service.

When the file "PocketGeigerProSetup.msi" is first run, a Windows 10 security warning may appear, in which case click "More Information" and then "Run" to continue.

Connect to a Windows 10 PC with the supplied USB Type-A cable.

Insert the cable firmly all the way to the back, being careful not to mistake the two sides of the cable.

If your Windows 10 PC is connected to the Internet, the driver will be installed automatically. After the driver installation is complete, "USB Serial Device (COM X)" will appear in the ports (COM and LPT) of the device manager. Here, the "X" in "COM X" will be the assigned port number.

Select "Comm Port" from the "SETTING" menu of the application. A list of available serial ports will be displayed. Select the port where the Pocket Geiger Sensor PRO is recognized and press "OK".

The Wi-Fi and Ambient settings can be configured from "Data Transfer Setting" in the "SETTING" menu. For details, please refer to "2.Collaboration with Ambient"

2. Collaboration with Ambient

Once setup is complete, connect to Ambient.

The Pocket Geiger Sensor PRO (Pro version) can automatically upload measurement data to Ambient, a free IoT cloud service, by connecting to Wi-Fi. Even if the Pocket Geiger Sensor PRO is not connected to a smartphone or PC, measurements will be uploaded automatically as long as it is connected to a USB power source.

2-1. Creating Ambient channels

Register as a free user on the Ambient page at https://ambidata.io/. A valid email address is required for registration.

Once registered, login to Ambient and click on "Create Channel". A new channel will be added to the list of channels. At this time, a "channel ID" and "light key" will be automatically issued, so please make a copy of them. If you wish to use "3. Free Illustration Display," you will also need the "Write Key," so please make a copy of it.

Be careful not to confuse the "Write Key" with the "Read Key"; the Write Key is required to link with Ambient, and the Read Key is also required to use "3. Free Illustrations" afterwards.

Next, click on the channel name (channel xxxx) of the newly created channel. This will bring up the channel's dashboard (Ambient calls it a "board"), which is currently blank. Once the data has been successfully uploaded, a graph of the measured data will be displayed. here. Do not close the Ambient web page, but continue to the next step.

2-2. Wi-Fi and Ambient Settings

Use the Windows 10 app to set up Wi-Fi.

Set the following items (1) through (12) in this order.

・(1) Mode Select the method of connection to Wi-Fi. Select either Periodic or Always depending on the network environment. Normally, either is acceptable.

・None (None) This is the default setting; no Wi-Fi connection will be made.

・Periodic: Connects to Wi-Fi periodically and uploads data to Ambient.

・Always: Always stay connected to Wi-Fi and upload data to Ambient periodically.

(2) Interval When Mode is set to Periodic, specify the interval between Wi-Fi connection and uploading data to Ambient at the same time. The minimum interval is 60 seconds and the maximum is 3600 seconds. This setting is valid only when Mode is set to Periodic. Ambient can register up to 3,000 data items per channel per day. The average pace is once every 28.8 seconds, so please be careful with the setting value.

・(3) SSID Specify the SSID of the Wi-Fi to be connected. Please check the settings of your Wi-Fi router or access point. Note that the frequency band that can be connected is only the 2.4GHz band, and the protocol supports 802.11 b/g/n. The maximum number of bytes that can be set is 32 bytes.

(4) Access Key Specify the Wi-Fi access key (password) to connect. Please check the settings of your Wi-Fi router or access point. You can set up to 32 bytes.

(5) Interval Specify the interval between uploads to Ambient when Mode=Always. The minimum interval is 10 seconds and the maximum is 3600 seconds. This setting is valid only when Mode is set to Always, and the Wi-Fi connection is always active. Ambient can register up to 3,000 data entries per channel per day. The average pace is once every 28.8 seconds, so please be careful with the installation value.

(6) channel ID Fill in Ambient's channel ID created in 2-1 above.

・(7) Write Key Fill in the write key of Ambient created in 2-1 above. Note that this is not a read key.

・(8), (9), and (10) are not usually set.

(11) Check the checkbox if you wish to turn off the indicator of LED (⑪).

・This is the time constant for calculating the moving average. The unit is seconds, and the settable range is 60 to 900 (1 to 15 minutes). The larger the value, the more stable the measured value will be, but if there is a sudden change in radiation dose, the display will be slower to catch up with the time constant. Normally, use a range of 600 to 900 (10 to 15 minutes).

2-3. Check connection to Ambient

After completing the settings, connect to Ambient.

Press Write to write the information, then press Reset (to restart the sensor) or ReConnect (to reconnect).

After the Interval time (sec) you set, you will be automatically connected to Wi-Fi and uploaded to Ambient View or refresh the Ambient board from your web browser to verify that the graphs are drawn. Ambient's board will generate the following two graphs

・d1 Dose rate (μSv/h) (microsievert/hour)

・d2 Error (±μSv/h) (microsievert/hour)
